RIP: January 9th, 1992 - June 25th, 2006COURTNEY SHALEY CROOMS On June 25th, 2006, the 14U Atlanta Celtics team won the championship in their age bracket at the NIKE Garden City Classic Tournament in North Augusta, South Carolina. Immediately after the championship game, the caravan of players and parents began their long drive home to Atlanta, GA. Less than two hours later and 80 miles east of Atlanta, Courtney was killed in an automobile accident. Courtney died at the age of 14 and would have graduated in May, 2010. She joined the Atlanta Celtics' family in 2005 and played both the guard and forward positions. Courtney was buried in a long-sleeved "custom-designed" adidas Atlanta Celtic uniform - #22, and her jersey was retired. Her family created a foundation - The Courtney S. Crooms Foundation - to honor Courtney's memory, legacy, and life, as well as to challenge and encourage female student-athletes to strive for excellence in every aspect of their life. Every year, the Atlanta Celtics organization honors Courtney's memory by making an annual donation to the foundation and supporting the "annual" Courtney S. Crooms Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament. Courtney's close friends and teammates - Alisha Andrews, Nia Evans, Kendra Long, and Pilar Smith - play for the CSC Foundation Team annually, as well as other "former and current" Celtic players.
