History - Girls Division

The ATLANTA CELTICS INC. (Celtics) has a history of sponsoring girls’ basketball teams, but had never fielded more than 1 team annually.

That all changed after the "completion" of the 2006 "summer" basketball season, when
Karl McCray and Korey McCray approved the merger of 3 teams - Scot Waldrop, Daphne Pierce-Smith, Maurice Antoine -  from the NEA Hawks and 2 teams formed by Renardo Hudson to establish a girls division.

Daphne Pierce-Smith
was selected to be the General Manager/Girls President by the CELTICS board.

Please note:
The ATLANTA CELTICS organization is a separate organization and not affiliated with the Wallace Prather (WP) Celtics – an organization formed by Coach Hudson after his departure in Fall, 2007.

BACKGROUND & SIGNIFICANCE

Atlanta Celtics - girls division (a.k.a. Atlanta Lady Celtics (ALC) organization) is a subsidiary of the Atlanta Celtics, Inc., a 503(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to teaching basketball skills, promoting of community service, and the development of personal and social competencies like problem-solving skills, moral reasoning, informed decision-making, self-control, and academic skills. Our administrative and coaching staffs are skilled and qualified, as well as strong leaders and effective managers. The girls division is an "elite" travel basketball club consisting of 3 teams between the ages of 12 to 17 years. The annual budget per team is estimated at $15,000. Each team competes in Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) and NCAA certified college-exposure events.

The ALC coaching staffs view every athlete as “unique” and focus on the development of the female-athlete through mentoring and educational programs.  The organization “specific” aims are: (1) to develop a sense of community through involvement and service in local charitable and civic organizations. These aims help student-athletes learn and understand their roles in solving community-based problems, and recognize the value of good citizenship; (2) to offer educational programs which focus on specific issues facing young girls in today’s culture. This provides student athletes with the necessary skills to cope in society, as well as help avoid pitfalls of poor decision-making; and (3) to instruct individual and team basketball skills necessary to maximize a player's potential to compete for a scholastic or an academic scholarship.

Players MUST maintain a cumulative 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA to practice and play for the organization.
